Default q-jet overhaul

my '72 350 auto was originally from california and still has the orininal 7042902 quadrajet carb installed.

rather than sending my carb from downunder to Lars for an overhaul, and being with out the vette for couple months,
and then paying double the postage/shipping costs etc,
i was thinking i'll just buy one from over there and have it shipped direct to Lars.
i had line on a carb on ebay, sent Lars a link and he said it was a good candidate for a rebuild,
but as i was waiting for the $ exchange to get a bit better, the ebay shop closed/dissapeared.

so now the hunt starts all over again,

question, what is the difference(s) between a Cali carb and any other carb?

a couple of numbers i found

7042902 4MV 1972 350 175 AT, CA (what i have now)

7042202 4MV 1972 350 175 AT, Non-CA

we dont have emmisions checks here, and the engine has been freshly overhauled,
20 over flat tops, 186 double hump heads cleaned up, mild hyd roller, proformer manifold and a 700r4 trans with 3.08 rear.

are any other years the same carb?
trying to keep a somewhat matching numbers, but i'm not going NCRS date code strict... if that makes sence

P.S. anyone got one they don't want anymore?

My last inquiry to Lars (last month) he replied he was no longer doing carburetor or distributor rebuilds.

I have a 7040502 ('70 base auto calif. emissions) that is in pretty good shape if you are interested.

Given your circumstances, your best bet might be to get a rebuild kit for your existing carb and do the work yourself.

Send this guy an email, i bought a rebuilt qjet for 454 from him, and it`s awesome!
He has been doing this for 30 years and built over 1500 carbs.
Got customers all over europe and US.
Lives in Sweden.

As 7T1 posted, rebuilding an unmolested carb is not difficult. Usually it only need to be cleaned and new a float and accelerator pump installed. Download Lars' papers and you'll be OK.

As posted above, I took my time and rebuilt mine with a NAPA kit and the carb has been working great for 15k mi. so far. Try it, no secret chants or voodoo required.

I did not know that. Did he give a reason?

No sir, he did not. I remember a while ago when he had surgery on his neck, and stopped for a while. I was in his garage (Viking bar) in 2008 watching as he rebuilt my carburetor after that, and he showed me the scar.

I only hope he is in good health......

Hey Lars. Are you out there? Perhaps you might give up some info on what happening with ya. That said, I am sure glad I met you when I did. My Lars built Qjet is the best ever.

river,

The Qjet on my '74 coupe had a non functioning choke, several parts missing, and it was unpleasant to drive in winter that way. I found another carb in my junk pile and took it literally around the corner to a guy who has been rebuilding carbs most of his working life. The number check on the new carb showed it was off a Buick 350 but it had an electric choke, which I wanted. After he played with it, I bolted it back on and the car now starts easily hot or cold.

I'm not saying that he's as good as Lars, but he knows his way around Qjets and my coupe is proof of it. I'm taking my '74 'vert to him next week to have its Qjet freshened up, and after that, the Carter AFB on my Caddy. I'm sure that he can get your carb back to a good working condition if you want. Call me on 03 9502 3227 if you want his contact details.

Regards from Down Under.
