Yea these days one has to practice safe surfing.
I have a [cable] router and firewall on my home network, and run Mcafee Virus software on all my PCs.
It is just too dangerous to go unprotected. :yesnod:

I've never understood what sort of ***hole you would have to be to write a computer virus. I wonder if they would think it was cool if somebody broke into their house and just smashed up some stuff because it would be fun. Destruction is destruction, we need firmer laws on that crap.

NOt that I know a whole lot about it, but my machine here has NO anti virus software for over 6 months now....in fact over the last 6 some odd years of surfing, the only times I ever caught a virus is when NOrton or Mcafee was installed....and ONLY twice was I ever warned of a virus they caught....all the rest went right through them like sh it through a goose...
IMO don't waste your time....only thing I back up is important doc. and of course my bookmarks and address files....all the rest is garbage....in fact I think it's a good idea to F disc about every 3 months or so...not that I do that, but still think it's a good idea....even though this last format destoryed the sound driver on this machine..and quite frankly, I don't care...
now if I had a cable modem and was into free music, well then I'd care...

Vixen, I stuck with win98, it's more stable than the later editions, apparently...and does enough for me, considering Office, and Browsing/email....
when ATTBI went to 50 bux/month for cable, I dumped it, on account of by the time they went to that price the service was NO faster than my dialup....
and buddy,....that's SLOW!!!
so I get cheap rates now....

Depending on the virus, I get inundated with the klez one. The research I did found that it is very good at appearing like it was sent by someone you know or even sent by you when you are not infected. It gets your email address from someone elses addy book... I get two or three a day and Norton catches it and others very well.

mrvette, you are a braver person than I to be running out here with no protection. I find that most are hacks at Bill and have links to Internet Exployer. If you use Netscape, seems to protect you from many.

If you were in the business of providing anti-virus software you would have a strong monetary incentive to crank out a steady stream of everchanging viruses, then create the software to protect against them. MJ
