I wanted to thank you for your home page and info you have given me on a/c. I found a hole in one of my hoses and replaced all the hoses and o rings. After getting some what of a run around I decided to retrofit the system. I borrowed a vacuum pump, unfortunately the rental places in York, PA don't carry pumps. Vacuumed down to 28 hg and it held for over an hour.
Unfortunately, when I started putting the second can of R134a I found a leak at the muffler assembly on the back of the compressor. Looks to be around the o ring on the low side. I tried tightening down more on the bolt but not sure if that did it. Now I am thinking the shop gave me the wrong size O ring. I really don't want to open the system to change the rings again on the compressor and vent the r134a to atmosphere.
One other thing I did notice as I tried to hook up the gauge to the new fitting on the high side the connection does seem to POP on. Anyone else
have the same trouble? Advance Auto gave me the fittings "pre1976".
You mentioned about the POA Valve adjustment, is that set screw on the lower fitting? I never took my valve out just hooked up the new hoses to it.
Glad you found the page useful. The high side connector will pop because of the high pressure. I never try taking it off with the ac running. I turn it off and wait a while until the pressure has dropped.
The POA valve adjustment is on the top, as installed. You probably do want to adjust it as it will drop vent temps about 10F.
I got the O-rings with a rebuilt compressor. I do remember them being a somewhat odd size (thickness).

Re: Air Conditioning Calling Zwede (zwede)
I am just about to the point in the restoration of my 73 to getting the AC to work. I took a look at your site and it looks like you have documented it pretty well... enough so that I have no fear of tackling this.
Thanks for taking the time to make the page...
