Default Radiator Shroud Fix

Anyone have any ideas on how to repair this:

someone must have cut out this section to get it to fit back in.

I bought a new shroud from Corvette Central and it isn't even close to fitting!

Anyone????

Thanks

Russ

Hi Russ, can you see the damage. I can't tell from your picture. I would probably square off the bottom jagged stuff would be even.

Your shroud is plastic, not fiberglass, I'm not sure how you could repair the plastic.

Default Imho, ....

IMHO, on my 72, (warning; this is a Bubba fix, LOL's).

I took an ABS plastic mud flap from AutoZone, cut to fit with a little overlap, drilled holes and pop riveted to fasten, & then painted everything flat black. Not very noticeable and restored the function of the shroud.

FWIIW, On other plastic parts like this, 4 wheeler, etc.. I have taken a soldering iron and melted the plastic edge and weaved it back and forth across the joint between the old piece and the new piece. Most soldering iron kits have a thin blade tip in addition to the regular soldering iron tip that is for this purpose.

Hope this might help.

you could also create a repair piece and install with JB Weld

Here's what I would do.
Pick up a plastic welder. Find a donor shroud. Clean up original damage area. Cut out repair piece from donor and weld 'er in.

I know it's plastic. About 3/8 thick. Going to take it into work and let a fiberglass expert take a look at it. We have sheet plastic also and he thinks he may be able to scab something in.

That's the only thing holding me up from starting my new engine!!!!

Can't believe the reproductions are so thin and the one I got doesn't fit.

Thanks

When looking for a used shroud, many of them had broken tabs that had been fixed. One of them looked really well mended so I asked the guy how he did it and he replied back with this in an email, maybe it might help to call CI:

I used a black resin and fiberglass mesh. The black resin is from Corvette Images from Oregon, they make press-molded fiberglass body parts for corvettes.

I have a broken shroud off of a 74 L-48 SB no/AC I will eventually throw away, if you tell me or show me where your break is I might have a piece that will work...

With Redvetracr's help and AzMotorheads suggestion you could end up with a functional, near invisible repair.
I'm cheap and use a regular soldering iron. Stab, tack the crack or replacement piece then smooth out the repair. Kind of welding and smoothing out the repair.
Redvetracr try the soldering iron, you may not be throwing out those damaged shrouds!

Thanks everyone but I took it to work and the guy fixed almost like 20Mercury said.

Painted it and the shroud and you can hardly see it now.

Thanks for all the great advice.
