Hello, I am new to Corvette forum and need some advise on an electrical issue. I have a 75 and was driving it fine until recently. I got in and noticed a burning smell when I tried to start it. The + battery terminal was smoking during the ignition process. I need help tracking down the potential problem. The car is all original and has been in the family since 81. Any help would be appreciated.
Was the cable sparking down by the starter. On many cars the positive battery cable goes straight to the starter and the positive post on the alternator goes down there too. If anything is shorting, it will spark and melt.
I actually don't even tighten mine down. I put it on and give it a twist and run it that way. When I'm done, I twist it back off to store it. Poor-man's disconnect. Back to the topic, anything that is sparking or getting hot and smoking is from a poor connection. Bottom line. Fix that connection.
The excessive amount of current flowing across a path of high resistance is going to produce heat and a voltage drop. All bad things. Do what ever it takes to reduce the amount of resistance such and cleaning all the terminals physically and chemically and make a better mechanical connection.
