Default Side Exhaust System/Shock upgrades

First Exhaust

I have to replace my manifold, heat riser gaskets, and a couple other pieces which is going to cost me about $300. So instead I am just going to replace my exhaust since I want a side exhaust anyways.

So I have searched quite a bit and a lot of the threads are a couple years old. So I am looking for a updated or long term status report on these two/three kits.

1. Dougs Headers, Side pipes, Glasspack mufflers in black $920

2. Same as above but in Silver ceramic coating $1220

2. OBX Headers, Side pipes non-resonated in SS $620

The specs are close to the same for both kits, 3/8" header flange, 1 7/8" pipes with 4" collector.

Second Shocks

I need to replace my front shocks due to them being original. Looked through all the posts and everyone recommends the Bilstein over the KYB's so I am not going to start that again. I am getting the Bilstein Sport's http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BSN-24-184526/ the question is

1. Do I replace my rear shocks at the same time?
2. Do I need too or should I install new springs?

Default Shocks

I would replace all four shocks at the same time. It's not hard. The springs should be fine unless they are sagging or broken. I've used Delco gas shock on my cars in the past.

As far as the exhaust is concerned, I have no idea. None of my cars have side pipes.

I have Doug's side pipes with the ceramic coating and am very happy with them. The only complaint I have are the muffler inserts. They are starting to rattle inside the pipes which if I knew this would happen before I installed them I would have welded the inserts to the inside of the pipes to avoid this.

I would like to know where you found these online? The only ones I could find are for big blocks...

these are the OBX style side pipe headers with 3/8" flange and 1 7/8" primary pipes.i use the welded SS. insert resonators.install them in couple hours with zero clearance problems side pipe are about 1" adjacent to body trim and require no cutting what so ever then remove 350" and installed monster 409" SBC.the AFR full CNC heads were modified by builder and angle milled when i went to install primary pipe is touching steering box and passenger side 1/32" from idler arm.had to remove driver side valve cover.they just fit.

I installed the OBX headers and sidepipes with STS inserts. I couldn't be happier!!!! I drilled a half inch hole in the forward end of the inserts to get a little more volume and it was perfect for my wife and I. Also went with shields to protect my wife's legs.

I've had the obx system about 3 years without issue, they do require some polishing but not anything difficult.they fit very well.I won't say they fit perfectly but they really are better than I thought they would.

So I missed the classified ad on the OBX Side Exhaust so.... they are impossible to find and I have emailed OBX with no response.

Has anyone used the Billy Boat side pipes? They are available and going for $695 and are insulated so they state I do not need covers, so with the price of the side pipes $335 (Doug's), $225 muffler inserts, and $500 for side pipe covers. I am looking at $1060 for side pipes or $695 for Billy Boats. Thoughts??

Side pipes & covers + headers = $1835

BB Side pipes + headers = $1470, But how do they sound?

I bought mine on ebay for $650 and used sweet thunder 2 1/4 " inserts... the heatshields were $50 each from summit and hardware was $15 to mount them...

I see the small block models do appear to be unavaliable ... It might have something to do with the fact that they are now being sold for $1,300+ a set by another vender who rebrands them... I'm not going break any forum rules by mentioning anything more... they used to be sold as a couple different brands before at drastically different prices before though... Not sure why in the last year it seems every time I check only the big block stock is left? Perhaps an agreement was made and the sbc ones are only going to be sold under other names for more now? (Just a heads up they are not really made BY OBX they are/were made for them.)

Everything on ebay is for a BBC, someone recommended getting adapters(?) to allow the headers to fit on my SBC. So I called a couple shops to get a timeframe and price on getting a set. The guy at the speed shop suggested putting L98 heads on my SBC and using BBC headers.

I installed the OBX and other than some discoloring on the collectors am happy with them. I also have had some issues with them leaking where the sidepipes and collecors come together. Does anyone have a fix for this? I was thinking some type of high heat caulk or maybe having them welded together.

That was one of the "other" brands that the obx pipes were also sold as.... and looks they went up about $200 from obx's price but now include the $30 mounting kit I had to buy on summit. There was another distributor that claimed they were made of a different grade of stainless too... It might have been XS-power... those were how they were sold before obx name..

BTW that seller is "taking preorders" for the pipes he does not yet have....
