Default Diff pinion to tailshaft align

Hello again! Still working on my 69 frame off and once again have a question for you experts. The body is off and I'm still working on the frame
Motors in, tranny in, diff heck just about everything on the frame.
On my th400 back i just replaced the tail shaft bushing and as I was putting the driveshaft back in I wondered.... Do I need to align the tranny to the diff? Not so much the angle but side to side? I'm not sure how much it will move since the tranny mounts seem to be slotted for front to back movement. Thanks!!

It's looking good.....but I have no idea about the side-to-side.....just keep the sidepipes from hitting the body when you slide it sideways........

The engines in vettes are offset to the right side of the car so no, they don't have to be in line. As longs as the engine centerline and diff centerline are mostly parallel you should have no problems.

As the engines in C3's are offset to the right a full 1-1/2" the drive shaft enters the tunnel at an angle which is okay because the angle back at the rear end is the same angle. Do some measuring and you'll find the engine is offset 1-1/2" and the transmission mount is offset 3/4" and then the rear end yoke is dead centered.

Default Offset

What is the purpose of the offset? why not keep it all aligned

I think it has to do with the pinion to ring gear alignment as its aligned within the case and the desire to have the half shafts equal length. Some say to give ore room to the driver idk,..

Its because of the big block options. The big blocks are considerably wider than the small blocks and the only way they could be stuffed in was by offsetting them 1-1/2" to the right side. The left exhaust manifold of my 1971 454" misses the rear of the upper a-frame washer by only 3/8" and the manifold is even notched for clearance. Then when under the car and looking up you can see the drive shaft enters the tunnel on the right side and is centered as it leaves the tunnel. Its things like this that make the C3's interesting.

Here's a picture of my engine that I took a couple of years ago. You can easily see how far it is offset to the right side.
