Default Retro Roller Cam Update - Water Pump Problem..

The literature that comes with my sweet new cloyes alum timing cover with built in roller cam button states it is designed to fit under a stock short chevy water pump. :bs Not mine. :mad Anyone running a long pump and pulley system? I am not too upset about having to buy a new pump and pulleys, was thinking of it anyways, but i wanted to test everything out and run what I got as long as possible. Now I have too. Any input would be appreciated. Also, I was thinking of trying to 1/2 inch shim everything but I think that would be too time consuming and cost about as much as all new parts. Gonna call summit tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Want to at least get 10% of anything I have to buy.

BTW check the pump and GM is casted right in it.

Thanks

Can you relieve the water pump with a grinder?

This water pump has a screwed on back and I removed the two screws/bolts that where hitting the timing cover but the water pump cover was still hitting leaving about a 1/4 inch gap. The cover feels very thin so I think ginding anything off of it is a no go plus I think I would have to grind the heads off the bolts leaving nothing to hold the water pump cover on. Might try getting a cast iron one from a parts store just to see if it will fit. Any ideas of what model and year of truck has the same pump. Figure better chance finding a truck pump than a vette one and probably cheaper even if it is the same pump.

Not fimiliar with a 'motor plate' can you tell me what it is. Also, did you have any belt issue since I am guessing the motor plate is or at least acts like a shim.

A motor plate is uded in race cars for the most part instead of the engine mounts used inour cars. You usually have a 3/8"-1/2" steel plate that bolts to the front of the engine and sometimes one on the back. Check out a picture of a nascar engine compartment, they use them.

If you change to a long style pump you are going to have to change all of your pulleys too, maybe see if you can get a set off of a camaro or something..... or better yet find a serpentine belt system off of a junker( you'll have to get a water pump ment for this system as they turn opposite the old style pump. I remember someone using an old Cprice serpentine belt system

I thought that might be what he was talking about. Seen one in Summit. Well I decide to give it the old cave man try and see if it would conform to my will and there was enogh give to allow it to mate flat so we'll see what happens. That timing cover is a work of art and the rear pump cover will give out long before it does. Lot's of  for nothing. Did find I can order a replacement alum pump from auto zone for $70. The cast iron one looked exactly like my alum one.

sorry i didnt get right back yes the motor plate is basically a motor mount for the motor that is sandwiched between the waterpump and the block,so it gave us clearance to fit the cloyes cover and the short pump.I did get to fit a short pump before on one of our motors but i had to grind down all the bolts to paper thin to fit.And yes that cover is a work of art.
