Check connections at resistor block and high blower relay if you have one. Sounds like the new switch is the problem. Remember "NEW" just means your the first one to use it, it doesn't mean it is good. Did you have this problem before you changed the HVAC switch. Also, what year is the car, and I'll assume it has A/C.

Ok, it is a 1978, does have A/C. All worked ok until, while driving home with the car, the blower went from high to low speed. As stated, the mode switch works as it should, switching from the A/C vents to heater and defroster vents. Also, when placed in either of the A/C positions, the A/C compressor engages. There is good cold air coming from the proper vents, just no action, other than low speed from the blower.

The speed is controlled by the resistor and the input wire that is changed by the blower switch. So I'd first go to the resistor and verify that the power is switching wires with the switch. Use the chart below so you'll know which wire to test in what speed. If the power is changing at the resistor then I'd look at the resistor and/or the blower motor.
