When my car has been sitting for more than a day, it seems to take a lot of cranking before firing over. It is a Rochester Quadrajet. I am looking for some opinions as to the most likely cause. Carb fuel bowl draining down or fuel pump? Something else? Thanks.
Yes, it's most likely leakdown. First, check and make sure your fuel filter has a check valve (hint: if the filter has nothing inside, there's no valve). If this checks out OK, you'll have to pull the carb and epoxy a couple of spots on the underside to prevent leakage...
I'd replace the bronze filter with a paper filter, but your problem sounds like you need to remove carberator, and disassemble and epoxy the well plugs.........common problem and recommended fix.......see Doug Roe's Rochester Carb. Book for details.
Mine does the same thing. I kinda live with by turning over the starter just a couple of times to get the fuel pressure up. Wait a few secs and then crank it. It usually cranks pretty quick. Just too lazy to pull the carb off for the real fix.
I've had the carb rebuilt and adjusted as well as having the well plugs blocked but it still starts on the third crank. This only happens when it has been sitting for more than 24 hours.
Before you rip it all apart, get a paper filter with the check valve! Mine takes about 10 sec to fire as I took mine out and installed an in line filter. When the car has been sitting, there is no fuel in the line from about 1/2 way up the block to the carb. Mine has only been hard to start since I took it out.
