Default Oil Pump Question.

I pulled my distributor and noticed the oil pump shaft was very lose. It feels like i could just pull it out. Does the shaft mount into the pump or is there a coupling similar to how the oil shaft connects to distributor? haven't replaced an oil pump in a very long time.

There's a plastic "sleeve" that slips over the distributor shaft and oil pump drive stud. it "captures" the two shafts, and keeps them in alignment. However, as any plastic can fatigue from heat, there's no guarantee that yours is still intact.

Both Melling and Moroso , maybe even ARP, make intermediate shafts with a metal sleeve, that's pinned in place. A good upgrade.

Two shafts are fit together in a tongue and groove type coupling with a plastic sleeve to keep them from sliding apart. Sometimes the plastic sleeve breaks and ends up in the bottom of the oil pan.
So yes it is loose in the hole per se but still can only come out through the bottom by taking the pump off IIRC, been a little while since I messed with mine.

Thanks, I think I have a steel sleeve but it is hard to tell. I recall doing that when I replaced the pump during my last rebuild. I double my engine builder would have used plastic even if that is what I originally had.

As the overhaul gaskets sets include those nylon sleeves your engine builder probably has several of them lying around.

Finally! I put the high velocity pump back in and spun the primer tool until my arm ached. (about 10 minutes) Got oil to some of the rockers and 30 LBS. pressure. Thanks to all for the help.

I have torn down a few 40 year old engines with the plastic sleeves. They are not brittle as you would expect They are rather tough and will not snap or break if you try to tear them up. Just sayin.

That's interesting. I was unable to pull the sleeve off the pump by hand to replace it with the new one. Fearing I would damage the shaft by prying it off, I burned it off with a soldering iron. Those sleeves are pretty tough!
