Default Half Shaft issues

Hi, Im sure its been discussed a gazillion times, but, I have 69, 427 390hp, 4 speed car. Just pulled left rear 1/2 shaft out to do u joints. Rock auto supplied wrong ones, too small but insist they are correct. My joints are 1.18 cup size and 3.65 cross size. Are they correct for the car?
Its a 50,xxx mile very original car.
Can I upgrade the shafts to bigger diameter ones and still use same diff side yoke ( has straps and bolts not u bolts ). If so any advantage?
Or just reco my original ones?
Next question, if I want to re-use my original ones, I need to find new flanges for the outer ends as they joints were sooooo tight I have bent the flange pressing ( yup in the press ) them out.
Very hard to find correct parts here in New Zealand, so any advice appreciated
Thanks Geoff

The small block drive shafts sometimes uses the smaller u-joints but the half shafts all use the larger 3-5/8" u-joints. Rock Island sent you the drive shaft u-joints that most small blocks used.

Geoff, here's a link for you.
All corvettes 1963-1979 use the 1350 series u-joint in the halfshafts.
Part # 5-1350X
Old # 5-799X

All corvettes 1963 - 1974 used a 2.5 in. diameter halfshaft, bb or sb.
All 75-79 use a 3" halfshaft.
All 63-79 halfshafts are 13 7/8 long center to center.
Beware: 1980-81 4 speed and 1982 auto halfshafts are also 3" but the length is 13 1/2" center to center

I built a jig to press out u-joints with my press. Measures about 3" length & depth, 1/4 " steel plate. The line on the side is center point, place that directly over the horizontal trunions as situated on the press (caps off). The circle on top is the press contact point . The hole is of no value, just scrap I had. I used a short section of black pipe underneath the lower cap for it to exit through. Using something like this avoids bending anything. My advise on installing the joints is forget the press. Tap caps in with a hammer and ring the flange as you go if you want joints to be free when the snap rings go in.

You have the 1 3/16" cups (big block and LT1). The small blocks use the 1 1/16". Go back to the Rock U-joint page and scroll through.

ps: Use your original flanges if possible. If you damaged them beyond repair get the correct 1 3/16" ones (or 1.1875 for the metric guys) and follow Vette Jim's advice for your install.

I replaced the half-shafts, u-joints and flanges with a complete set purchased from Vansteel. All I had to do was bolt them on. 20 minute job. Would highly recommend. Excellent customer service

There is no such thing as big block and small block u-joints. 63-79 are ALL 1350 series. LT-1, L-88, L-89, ZL-1, L36, L-48 etc doesn't matter, they are all the same on the halfshafts.
Same on driveshafts, no such thing as big block or small block u-joints.
All 63-67 driveshafts use 1310 u-joints
All 68-70 4 speed driveshafts use 1310 u-joints
All 68-70 auto driveshafts use 1330 u-joints
All 71-79 driveshafts use 1330 u-joints.

Default Flange

Don't use your old flanges if they are in any way bent. You really need to bolt them up to a plate to keep them from distorting when you work on them. The c-2 forum has a wealth of info on the subject. If possible, get Spicer joints without grease fittings. Jerry

Those are for the driveshaft, not for the 1/2 shafts.

You are correct; 1 3/16" caps on all halfshafts, 1 1/16 for driveshaft.
