I've been working on my '76 and all the gauges work except the battery gauge. I replaced the gauge with one that was known to work and I still get nothing. It just stays dead in the middle. The wiring appears to be untouched in the dash. Can someone with experience tell me the best approach to tracing down the problem?
I don't have the wiring diagram in front of me, but usually an ammeter gauge goes between the alternator output stud and the battery (or starter solenoid where it connects to the battery cable).
do you have voltage across the terminal from the alternator side (when running)? What is the output of the alternator? (it may not be putting out more voltage than the battery).
does it show discharge when key on/engine off? if not, you may have to get the diagram and chase the wiring...

Thanks! I don't know why I didn't think to check the voltage at the connector while I had the dash open.... guess i'll just have to pop it back open and see if I have anything at the plug. The Alternator is brand new (110 amp) and seems to be running everything well and charging the battery better than the old 63 amp one it replaced. I'm sure one of my books has the wiring diagram, guess i'll check voltage first then go wire chasing.
Before you tear the dash open, check the two fusible links in the circuit. One at the horn relay and the other near the wiper motor coming out of a connection on the heavy red wire.
