Oh I know all about how it works myself but to ignore that fact one minute when it works to your advantage and then sway the other way to make another point...
One logical reason GM likely used VS carbs was because it was an all around more foolproof and "self tuning" setup and more efficient on the street (and for emissions output) over a DP which with out a doubt is engineer more for top end and performance on the track. and most of the cars GM sold were designed for street use first as far as I know although there were exceptions sold mainly for track performance and there were cars sold by GM with DP installed (HMM strange coincidence)

And better performance thruout the entire rpm range the engine would be operated in. The overhead camshaft Pontiac inline 6's came with a QuadraJet. Can you even begin to imagine how bad it would run with a mechanical secondary 4-barrel?
I think I see the flaw in this argument......
When I think "street machine", I don't think "factory".
I see the "basis" for making a street screamer.
Too broke thinks that every guy who buys a factory performance machine will leave it that way.
Some may, but I would venture to guess that a majority look for more performance asap their wallet allows.
As pointed out by others, the "factory" decision to use vac secondaries is not confined to performance but to a variety of reasons.
Seems like the argument continues to be an apples and oranges exercise in futility.
BTW - an inline 6 cyl is not my idea of a street machine so the 4 bbl comment on that is just a strawman shot.
