Would like to purchase an orifice removal tool for use on a 1979 and 80 Corvette. Have been looking at the applications of different models and cannot find one that specifically lists 1980 GM cars. Can someone post a model that will work?
Is the orifice stuck in tube? The best tool is heat....If you heat the tube it should come out all that holds it is a small o-ring.
Years ago GM made a repair kit for the tube when the orifice was stuck but now it's only available from a company called Santech and the part number is MT0829. I'm pretty sure it will work but you can verify that at your local parts house. Your local part store should have access to this part.
What you have to do is cut the tube and then install this adjustable tube in place. Re-install the orfice and your good to go.

Would heating the evaporator line with a heat gun be sufficient? The heat gun has a high and low setting. I do have a propane torch but would be reluctant to use it in such a confined space, as I would be afraid of starting a fire.

Heat gun should be plenty. The tube is aluminum and should expand pretty fast. Have a good set of needle nose pliers handy to reach in and grab the orifice.

Spot on advice here I don't own a orifice removal tool... never have, and probably never will.
The heat gun on high will do the trick. Don't force the issue and break it off just take your time and you'll get it.
The last time I had one stuck it just deformed the orifice tube removal tool. As stated above needle nose pliers worked for me. Might help if you can get some AC oil in there when you heat it.
I used the removal tool, and when the ears broke off the orifice tube, we had a long screw, kinda like a drywall screw. Screwed that in and pulled it out with pliers. Don't think I ever saw a heat gun in those days, and they probably wouldn't trust us with it anyway.
