Default EGR removal

This is related to the post by vettus, didn't want to hijack his thread. 73, EGR valve appears to have never been removed for service and it's been disconnected sometime in it's life. Can you safely remove the valve without worrying about a bunch of crap falling into the engine? I want to clean the intake mating surface, install a new valve and leave it disconnected. Thinking I'll use a shop vac. while cleaning . I'm chasing idle issues.

Clean the surrounding rust the best you can but most of the junk under it is carbon that will burn up in the engine anyway.
