Hello this i s my first topic here.
I´m mounting a brand new harness in my c3-72.
On the steering column there is a kapacitor mounted.
And ofcourse the cable in broke.
What does it do, do i need to get a new one.
The cable that is connected to it is brown and rather thick.
Look at picture.
/ Robban from sweden.
Hi Robban,
First Post! and from Sweden!
AND, you have a Corvette!!!
WONDERFUL!!!!
I believe the capacitor in your picture is one of several (4-5?) added to the car's electrical systesm when a car was equipped with a radio.
Things that could cause 'interference' in the radio's sound got the capacitors… directional signals, brake lights, heater motor, coil, etc..
I'm not sure just what THAT capacitor is for though… maybe ignition?
Do you know about the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM)? It's a book used for the production of each year's car. It's very helpful to those of us working on these cars now. The capacitor is shown in that book on UPC69, Sheet A3, Item 7.
The capacitors are available here but I'm not sure just how you go about getting parts for your car in Sweden.
I'm glad you have a Corvette! Are you enjoying it?
Regards,
Alan
Hi Alan!.
Thanks for the reply.
Yes i have the assembly book for 1972 Corvette and its helpful but there is things that is hard to find or i´m useless trying to find it
Then i will try and see what´s happen whitout the capacitor first.
I bought the car after standing 15 years on jack stands.
The previous owner had bought alot of thing so i have boxes standing with new stuff.
He ha started changing the harness, its a complete one exept litlle things.
Regards Robban
Does the original harness REALLY need to be replaced?
Maybe the previous owner bought a harness because he didn't know whether the original harness was good or faulty.
If you DO need to replace the original harness take your time installing the new harness. Take pictures of the routing of the original harness before you remove it......the new harness will need to go exactly where the original harness was, since everything fits tightly in there.
Hi Robban,
I hope it works out for you.
How about a couple of pictures of your car…. we always enjoy seeing what people are working on and posting about.
Regards,
Alan
I have looked at some rust issues at Birdcage.
See if i can fix them on sight.
Looks solid and around windshield.
The only Places thats is bad is right hand lower corner Birdcage.(the worst side) and a bit on the left side
Won´t lift the body for that issue, see if i could do a quick fix.
I´m lucky the frame is pretty solid.
I will put the car on the lift and rustprotect all the frame so it doesn´t get worse.
When i´m searching the internet there seems to be a standard problem with all these cars!
I was looking at the aim katalog and got this.
What is vacuum remoted in the rear??
On a non AC equipped car, the "Astro Vent" flapper door is vacuum operated.... the canister is up under the deck, below the rear window, and the vacuum hose goes from there, behind the seat, into the shifter console.

Thanks! By the way the AIM catalog sucks to search in.
There is no order , or otherwise i suck searching in it
the way the AIM catalog sucks to search in.
There is no order
Yes, it is difficult to navigate at first. There is some order to it, but without an index, it`s hard to find anything. So I went through and made my own index, and divided it into 2 sections.... interior, and exterior, with headings like "wiring", "seats", doors", etc., and listed the page numbers. So if I need to find window regulator for example, I go to interior, then doors, then regulator is listed under that.
I put it on heavy paper stock, and put it in the front of the binder. It is quite helpful, and only took about 15 minutes to do.
Try it... I think it will help every time you need to use the AIM!
Congratulations on your vette! I bought my first vette about a year ago, a 1972 Elkhart Green 350 small block 4-speed with black interior. I love it. I have learned a lot from this forum and the great people that post information here. With their help, I have gone through almost every system on the car fixing and restoring things. Have fun!
