Default Air intake duct concern

Me again...as I was digging around under the hood to find where the hood is catching, I noticed that the air intake duct is shredding. It is like a fabric material and looks like age has taken its' toll. It appears that air is escaping through this duct. Is it safe to drive for a day or two until I can replace it? Will it damage anything?

I wish I paid closer attention to things like this when I would watch my brother and dad work on cars. So much to learn and so much I don't know. Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Yes, the only purpose of this setup is to provide the engine with cooler air that hasn't gone thru the radiator (thus heating it up). Alot of people remove the whole setup. Might cost you a couple of HP, but probably won't really be noticeable.

Most of the online vendors carry replacements, but they will be a different material (not a problem unless you are getting the car NCRS judged).

FYI .........................a lesson that I learned from Forum members:

Did your car have a thick foam strip across the top of the radiator support that seals against the underside of the hood?

If the foam is disintergrating or completely missing---install new foam...it helps the engine stay cooler in the summer.

Good to know! It's not in horrible shape, but probably should be replaced in the near future. Thanks for the heads up.
