Default Engine decoding, pls.

Hi
A German forum member has a 69 Vette with following engine.
Casting: 14093638
Castung date J049
Suffix V1009ZZZ

So, it should be a 350 CI dated 1989, is this correct ?
What does the suffix say ?

Thanks GUnther :seeya

Gunther,
Mortec shows that block # as a 87-95 350. I do not have a listing for the ZZZ suffix. My guess is that it is an early ZZ crate engine. Currently they have a ZZ4 out but believe that the first ZZ engine was called ZZZ. So it could be one of the first generation ZZ engines and was built in '89. But just a guess.

I agree with Tom. This is what Chevrolet Power manual says about it:
"The H.O. 350 small block V8 was introduced in1989 as PN 10134338. This original H.O. engine was known as the "ZZZ" version, a reference to the manufacturing code on the block's serial number pad just above the water pump"

It also says this about the spesification:
"Cast hypereutectic pistons with 9.8:1 compression and no wrist pin offset. Single pattern camshaft with 235 degrees duration (at .050-inch tappet lift) and .480 inch maximum lift."

Horsepower rating was 345 on all ZZZ through ZZ3 engines (355 on the current ZZ4). Camshaft is a hydraulic roller. On the specs of the ZZ4 it says maximum recommended engine speed is 5800 rpm. Don't know how safe it is to go beyond the recommendation but friend had a ZZ3 in his trans-am and he used to rev it past 6k without problems
