Back Ground : Got a !979 350 from my grandfather a month ago. its been sitting for 3 years. cranked monthly. prior to that sitting under a tree for 5 years somewhere. has been running perfect. drove it 2 miles to a shop. drove it 2 miles back.
Issue: Pulled in parking lot and cut out. cranked up immed. and then cut out. It felt like it had run out of gas. Filled it up with premium and nothing. Hit it with starter fluid and fires up immed then dies out. pulled the air cleaner off and poured gas directly in the carb and same thing. changed fuel filter in base of carb. still nothing. more gas? clogged jets?
Question: do i need to prime it some how? Im not very familiar with mechanical fuel pumps but was told if i wanted to replace it i would need to raise the motor several inches. I can buy a new pump no prob just dont want to waist any time/$. any suggestions
Disconnect the fuel line from the carb, slip on a piece of 3/8" fuel line, and crank it over. Should fill a pint container in less than 30 seconds. Start with that, since it ran before.

After following Big2Bird's suggestion and find you need to replace the fuel pump, you don't need to raise the engine to change it, search on the forum for changing fuel pump should you need information on doing it
Fuel is new premium and drove good for a month.
No fuel at carb or fuel pump.
Removed fuel pump but am finding it difficult/impossible to hold the shaft back and slide the new pump on. Tried heavy grease per Hanes manual tried flathead, saw blade to prop it. It is just too tight it seems. May try taking the mounting plate off too
Thoughts?

You don't need to take the plate off. 1. rotate the engine so the rod is in as far as it will go.
2.you can just remove the bolt going thru the front of the block that lines up with the pushrod . replace it with a longer one.snug it with rod in the block but don't crank down on it.it will hold long enough to install the pump. just don't forget to remove it and install the shorter one before you crank it.
3. REPEAT: DON'T FORGET TO REMOVE LONGER BOLT AND REPLACE WITH THE SHORTER BOLT BEFORE CRANKING THE ENGINE!!!
