New underhood lamp from Lectric Limited only works with the lamp upside down (socket end up, lamp shell down)? But it won't shut off when the hood is closed. If installed right side up, it goes on with the hood closed. Is it even possible for it to have been assembled backwards?
The light works off of a mercury switch. I've never taken one of those lights apart, but it could be possible that the switch was installed in it upside down, I'd guess?
I'd say a call to Lectric Limited would be in order.

At $40.00 a pop for this lamp, I really don't want to destroy it trying to take it apart. Yes, maybe the 7 year old who put it together did it backwards. I would take it apart if somebody knows how to do it without damaging it. LL is not open on Saturday.
Remove the bulb.
On the other end you'll see a small C clip on the black plastic part. Remove the C clip and push everything out through the light bulb hole.
You'll notice the black piece is split. Separate it and you'll find the mercury "capsule". Turn the capsule around end for end and put it all back together.

I had some time this afternoon and found that c clip and it came apart very easily. I missed it last night because it was black as the plastic. I went out today armed with my glasses. Anyway, the light lights with the hood up now and is actually off when the hood is closed. So the answer is yes, the capsule was in backwards(from Lectric Limited). Thank you very much for posting
Please call LL, just to inform them of the mis-assembly. They need to pass that info back to the manufacturer and fix their process. If you don't let them know of their problem, 1000 other folks might get the same fault.
P.S. We ARE the beta testing 'bed' for these aftermarket parts, you know.

I was going to call them just to tell them to fire that 7 year old who put it together.
