This popped into my head but if you ever took apart a pull starter on a lawn mower or an small engine, it's very similar to that. You have to anchor the nylon rod in a notch. Then wind it up, hold it all together and screw the plate over it.

Good analogy! But, much easier than installing the pull-starter example because there is no return spring tension.
Have tube of fresh grease. The old stuff gets dry and crusty being subject to muffler heat (I painted mine silver to help reflect the heat a bit. It cannot be seen as it is well tucked up there.
