I have a 78 L48 4-spd runs real strong but would like 50-75 more horses
What would be your advise to acheive this with the original engine I am planning a rebuild after the first of the year and want to get everything ready first
also please advise cost of up grades
thanks as always on your input
No rocket science needed here! There are so many SB build ups that you can shop for the power you need. A good rebuild that includes new heads cam and intake will give you 50-75 hp. Now you have to ask yourself how many rpms do I want to go? The Vortec heads are about 400, cam and lifters are 200 and 150 for intake. Add in dual exhaust andf you are there. You can spend less or more depending on your goals.

Get World Products Sportsman II Heads - that's at least 50+++ HP...
I have seen them for approx. $700
Sportsman IIs netted me 55 hp while even using stock exhaust 2-1-2 system sans operational catastrophic converter. Mountainmotor has been messing around with Protopline heads that look even more promising. Should check it out, approx $750.
