I pulled the column from the car and collapsed it on the bench. It was only about an hours work to get it out and it gave me the opportunity to clean everything and lube the shaft.
I have linked a video of how to collapse it if it helps.
All my front suspension is off. I centered my steering wheel, then locked it. I used my dremel with wire brush still no go.
Les on here used a small file to deburr the edges of the column - may be worth a try to check for burrs.
As far as lining up, you could also try loosening the 2 bolts at the firewall and 2 support bolts just above the heater duct connector pipe to give the column a little wiggle.
Lube the lower column on the outside before you tap it in and it should pull out fairly easily. I clamped a vise grip around it and lightly tapped the vise.
Thanks all, rag joint in, box in!!!!! Now, Service manual says torque steering gear to 30#. All full sized cars say 70#. So,.....what has everyone torqued their New box to?
