Default Healight relay

Headlights in my 75 go off after about 15 seconds. They are halogen and I first replaced the dimmer switch, which didn't help then the headlight switch and that didn't help either.

So I am now going with two relays, new plugs and new, heaver wire. The only original wire will be from the hl switch to the dimmer switch.

Between brakes and lights this car is driving me crazy.

Either your headlight switch or the multi-terminal plugin that plugs onto your headlight switch is burned up. I would return all of those unneeded parts and get your money back...................

The headlight switch has a circuit breaker that trips from the heat when you use halogen bulbs.

The halogen bulbs shouldn't trip the switch but who knows... there are two different people making the repro headlamp switches (both are imported) and a couple of years back one had a history of failure. Maybe the OP has one of those switches.

If it were me, before I did the conversion I'd find the fault which is simple enough. Power up the headlamps from the dimmer switch and see if you can replicate the problem. If you can't then I'd say the switch is the issue. The 15 seconds and then off sure sounds like a headlamp switch issue.

IMHO,

Willcox

Thanks for the replies. I tried about every test and combination of lights with two different switches and both acted the same. As it seems all replacement switches are a gamble, I think I will go ahead with the relays. Thanks, Dave

Replacement halogen should be the same wattage as the stock bulbs and still work. So, did you install stock same wattage replacements or higher wattage bulbs? Info on the bulbs you used could help.

I would use fusible links before using those fuse holders. Use really good connectors at the relay power connections too. One bad connection and you lose your lows which would really suck.

FYI, there are relay harnesses on eBay for about $40.

I have to respectfully disagree. First off, in my opinion the headlight switch was never made well enough in the first place.
When I upgraded the headlights, they would flash or just cut out.
Now, all the headlight switch is used for is a trigger for the relay that carries the load. Once you do the mod, you can put that issue behind you.
