I agree that the factory rims are garbage, but they were state of the art then, so they get a pass, and frankly, I think short of the Trans Am Turbo rims of the early 80's, they are the best looking stock rim GM ever made, old or new.
Anyway, time passes and you gotta move on. Looks like I'll be shopping for a set of 17's next spring, depending on how much of a hit my clutch and trans budget takes this winter.

I put on a set of 255/60/R15's Cooper Cobra's on my 77 and have been happy. I don't drive her hard, so they are perfect for cruising around the backroads of Tennessee.
I think they look good and the price was right vs the BFG's
If you're willing to spend the money, you can still buy the tire that came on the 1978 Pace Car (255/60-R15) for about $1600, or for less than $1500 a set of R15 Goodyear Eagle GT's...

I would go all the way up to 18" wheels if I was making a move. Choices for 17" tires are becoming more and more limited.
