My horn honks sometimes i know i have 2,but what would cause this ?
A bad electrical connection or a bad horn relay (same as a bad electrical connection). Your horn relay should "click" when you depress the horn button so if it doesn't you'll have to find out why.
When does it tend to honk? If it happens when you're turning the wheel to corner the problem is most likely inside the steering column. A broken snap ring cover or out of shape outer spring will cause this.
If it doesn't seem related to turning the steering wheel it may be a defective horn relay.
From '78 (if not before) on, the horn relay is installed on the wiring harness very near the fuse box. Look above and left of the fuse box--yes, it's hard to see in there let alone do anything. Remove the horn relay being careful not to tug on the harness--much easier written than done... Remove the cover from the horn relay and shake it vigorously. If you see the contacts close--even momentarily--replace the relay. I'm not sure when the change was made, but earlier models used a totally different type of circuit and horn relay that if my memory serves tended to cut power to nearly the entire electrical system when they failed.
I had all of the above problems and combined with one horn with an intermittent internal short in my '79. I was going CRAZY! It was even after giving alternate power to the horn relay (the original power wire was dead because it had been yanked out of its factory splice in the harness--no wonder) before I began to discover the other problems.
Yessir 78, you dont think ot may be in the horn part on the steering wheel ? But yessir i will check that, i appreciate all the help, everyone thinks that when you own a vette you are loaded im comdortable but some of the prices i get told is crazy . Thanks again .
Thanks, it blows when i start it and sometimed when im going down the road ,
OK, now I understand what your getting. There is a black wire that goes into the steering wheel that shorts to ground when you push the horn button. That black wire could have a bare spot and touching the steering column intermittently, or the horn button contact itself could be causing it to ground. When you wiggle the horn button a little does the horn blow? Is the horn cap on loose, or does it fit snugly? Does the horn work normally when you press it?
