Default 72 power steering pump?

Can anyone answer this. I took the power steering pulley off the pump to do a cleanup and found it had a felt washer on the shaft between the pulley and the pump. Is this correct? I would like to replace the felt washer but can't find one shown or listed in/on any of the vendors sites. Thanks

Your pump didn't come from Saginaw Steering Gear with a felt washer. For that matter it didn't come from Saginaw with a pulley either. So check your 1972 Corvette AIM. If the felt washer was OEM, the AIM will call out the felt washer along with the pulley and attaching nut being assembled at St. Louis.

Interesting, the pump did come from Saginaw with the 1/8 x 1/2 Woodruff key located in the slot on the driveshaft.

I just went through my 72 GM overhaul manual and it does not mention anything about a felt washer.

I think having that felt washer would be a good idea...just for the reason that you mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised to find that there was a GM Service Bulletin written to put that washer in place when doing rebuild of the pump. Otherwise, its installation was from a "savy" mechanic.

I bet you could use one of the felt washers for top battery posts without even having to trim it!
