Default LT-1 intake or??

Just picked up a 74 L-82 project car (thread in general section) the intake is from a 71-72 LT-1 with an adapter for a holley spread bore. It's been a while since Iv'e had a carborated engine. Is this still a decent manifold or am I better off with the original or a newer design such as the performer rpm? Thanks in advance, John

the problem is the adaptor, decide which way you want to go spreadbore based carburetor or square bore. You dont mention which Holley spread bore is on the car now. It's strange that they would go from an aluminum L-82 to an aluminum LT-1 manifold, are you sure the engine is an L-82?

Yes, I posted a pic of the block stampings on the other thread. The carb on it now is a 650 double pumper 4165 series.

In that case I would keep the intake and install a 750 vacuum secondary square bore from either Holly or Quick Fuel, etc.

Well, if I were to go with this intake, I would go with a square bore and get rid of the adapter and do it properly with the right fuel line and vacuum etc.

I would definitely stick with the intake you have. I have a '72 LT-1 with a new 750cfm Holley and its a really smooth, strong pairing.

Not sure what hood you have on there but I seem to remember that the LT-1 / Holley combination won't fit under a standard hood. LT-1's had a cowl induction hood to accommodate the taller combination of carb / intake. I could be wrong and it may fit just fine, but I think I remember reading it somewhere.

650 will give better throttle response. 750 will give you more top end hp. Your choice. Carb adapters are bad news, messes up the flow. That has to go.

You are correct regarding clearance with the hood. I have a 72 LT-1 and when I got the car it had the incorrect carb on it along with an air cleaner that was incorrect. The Holley that was on it had a thick base plate. When the previous owner slammed the hood he cracked it due to interference with the air cleaner.

I was lucky enough to find a date correct/application correct Holley for my car. The base plate of that Holley was not as thick as the generic replacement on the car when I got it. Once I got the new carb and stock LT-1 air cleaner and fuel line installed I had no clearance problems. You can check your hood clearance with either balled up clay OR aluminum foil in a ball. Sorry for the long post but hope this helps the OP in getting things right.

BTW that intake and carb combo is strong. In the past I used an LT-1 intake on my 58 w/stock 283 and a performer carb...that too ran strong. Good luck with the fitment.
