Default Petronix ignition

I have a 69 big block, 4 speed with the factory transistor ignition (restored) Would it be a good idea to install the Petronix ignition in the distributor cap? Are these compatible?

If the factory TI is working well.....leave it alone. You will see zero benefit.

You have a 6 volt resister wire going to your points. The pertronixs needs a 12volt source so some wires will need changing.

The factory TI does not have points. The TI uses a 12V feed, it does not use the point type resistor wire.

Default Don't do it.

The factory TI put out almost twice the voltage at high RPM and was good to 10,000 rpm. What more could you ask for. Having said this, the only thing that I would consider doing is having the magnet changed in the distributor. The strength of the magnet can degrade with time and you can get a weak signal to the pulse amp. You could have it sent off to Fred Fielder and let him check it to see if it is signaling well. I would leave the amp alone unless it breaks, then I would put a new updated module in it. All just my opinion.
The pertronics is a great improvement over conventional points. I believe mechanical points dwell time changes with higher rpm and the coil has less time to build its field which means you get some degradation in spark voltage. Your factory TI does not have this issue. It is a flame thrower compared to factory points.
I need to be careful what I say because, I just regurgitate what I read. Experience sometimes lacking along with brain cells.

I would not put in a pertronix unit again. I installed one years ago and it only lasted a few months. Then one night it went out and I was on the side of the road putting my points back in the distributor to get home.

I have used Pertronix points eliminators for years. They work just fine. Having said that, I have gone back to points. I like the simplicity and originality.

Hi guys, thanks so much for your input. I will leave well enough alone! Leave it to me to foul things up! I did use Fred to restore my original TI. Outstanding workmanship!
