Default Rear View Mirror Rebuild Tips Needed

I have a 10" map light mirror from my '74 which needs a paint job and new glass.
Anyone have any experience taking the rubber edging and old glass off to rebuild?

I found the glass ("prismatic") and instruction sticker at Paragon for the rebuild.

YES.,..I warm up the rubber gasket to make it more pliable. If my memory serves me correctly...the glass is also bonded to the rubber seal. Getting the glass out can be a bit challenging....but this is something that I have not done a lot.

For mine, I used a razor blade to help separate the rubber from the glass, then used black weatherstrip adhesive to attach the new mirror glass.

See attached article that appeared in the NCRS Restorer several years ago. I used the heat gun to soften the rubber surround...works very well, breaks down the old, dried adhesive.
Used a small, flexible bondo spreader wedged between the glass and seal to aid in removing the seal.

Great article. thanks for the detail and the lead on resilvering.
what are the advantages of resilvering over buying a replacement glass mirror portion only? the glass is about $40.

Default RE Mirror

Slight hijack, thought I'd keep it in the same thread for others to find. My glass is ok, but the joints are loose and the mirror will not stay in place. Any tips on fixing this?

I've seen posts on this Forum where the complaint was the replacement glass wasn't exactly the same size as the original, creating installation problems. Don't know if this was specific to a particular vendor. If you resilver your original glass, you know it will fit properly.
For my '71, it was $50 to resilver the glass.

It is a quandry.

I called the resilver place. Very nice guy. Price is still $50.
Said there is some risk if the glass is scratched it will not look as good as new.

I did learn that the way a day night mirror works is that the top is thicker than the bottom, or vice versa.

I am leaning toward the Paragon replacement route.

Thank you very much for the info on how to do the rebuild.
