Not all that difficult, just replaced the cable on my 78 (no cruise). At the tranny end, the cable screws in, and there is easy access. But the speedo end can be more difficult. There is a clip that holds the cable in place, and this clip is attached to the speedo head. To release the cable, you have to push the clip towards speedo (that would from behind pushing on the backside of the speedo). If you can get your hand up in there, great. But you may have to remove the vent ducting and/or lower-dash-cover-under-the-steering-column thingy. A small mirror would help you see what it looks like. When re-assembling, it will make things easier to line up the square inner cable with the speedo receiving hole first. Oh yeah, connect the speedo end first when installing the new cable, it's easier if you have the cable slack under the dash.
For cars with cruise, there are two cables. One from tranny to cruise transducer, and one from transducer to speedo.

hey , i have a cruise , its 2 cables , lower and upper . inside the engine compartment i see the cable sticking out ( i guess from the speedo in the car ) . looks to me like the part sticking through the firewall is a male threaded plug. i purchased the upper cable and that 2 is a male on both sides . i have a 350 turbo trans , not sure where to hook it up to . a friend took out the cable because it was frayed and old , but went on vacation before replacing it and wont return till mid sept.
