did some trouble shooting with system yesterday. here is what ive determined.
1. no power to A/C compressor..Fuse? Switch? did some checking with test light to no avail
2. vacuum pressure to water shut off valve is ok. correct pressure at correct switch position.
3. deflector and vacuum actuator operate freely. dont know why they are not getting vacuum.
4. tested vacuum at source. vaccum holds but doesnt drop when position switch is moved.
does all this mean i have a plug or bad control assy?
did fix the radio troubleshooting A/C power source. one wire backed out of the coupling. now my old radio works.
Mike, wish i could help as i have some of the same problems. my heater shut off valve seems ok,it just doesn't shut the heat off. i placed a small wood dowel piece on the lever, behind the glove box to act as a spacer so i can get the door closed. but i have no defrost and everything checks ok. it's been this way for a couple of years. this winter i plan on fixing this if it's the last thing i do. very, very frustrating.
On the power to A/C compressor, on my 82 it comes from a relay located in the engine comp., passenger side firewall connected to the harness connection box. (sorry, no pics) You should check it.
On the vacumn issue, sounds like your A/C control lever assembly. You can test this by finding the vacumn source to the switch, then connecting across the various ports to your doors to find the issue. If source to door direct connect works, then your switch is problably clogged up or leaking.
Gary,
if i have to ger defrost. i thought i would hook up vacuum tubing to the actuator. then crank it with a hand vacuum pump. gonna follow woodies adv on testing the switch (which i hope its not)
Woodie,
thanks for the relay tip. didnt know there was one. it will be the next thing i check.
