So, I got the power steering control valve off my '81. The "nut" that holds the ball stud is supposed to turn counter clockwise to remove the shaft. Mine, of course doesn't want to turn. Before I go farther, am I missing something? Should I put it in a vice and try tapping it out with the screwdriver and hammer? I'm not a mechanic, but figure this a good place to start. The pick is pointing to the nut.

Willcox has a great YouTube video of reassembly that I watched (lots!)when I rebuilt mine. I used that to understand how to disassemble. I cannot remember exactly how I got that nut out. I think I did use a flat head and a few taps, but someone with more experiance will chime in.
Thanks. I've watched the video on removal and rebuild. They did forget to add 34 years of crud caking everything. I didn't want to start banging on it if I was missing something simple. It was packed with grease, apparently to slow/stop the leak, so it definitely needs a rebuild.
yes turn CCW, use largest screwdriver you have, or make a tool out of steel. hold in vise like the instructions from the website in the picture show. it should not be that tight...(you can even use a chunk of steel in a pair of vice grips)
I got it to move 1/4 turn, and I can move it slightly up and down. It won't come loose though. If I cant get it to turn and release, I may see if I can tap it from the other end. I have a step by step printout I dot off the forum. I stopped when it got late and I started getting impatient.

Soak it with some pb blaster and use as large of a screw driver as you can find... if it works a bit counter clock wise, then take it back clock wise a bit.. keep working it you'll get it free. I'd not resort to hammering it just yet, it's best if you can keep f
Chances are that you just have corrosion and debris in the threads which are restricting rotation. Clean the outer threads out well with PB Blaster (or other rust penetrant) and small wire brush. Try it again.
Soaked it with PB Blaster overnight, put it in a vise and tapped it out. Going to clean and paint in the AM. I'll lay under the car and scrape 34 years of crap off everything I can reach while the paint drys.

I used a stubby extension to tap it out. Worked great.
