Default 72 rear outward seat mount bolt hole

I need something to work and I remembered that the 2 rear outer seat mount bolts are longer and held in place by a hex nut on the bottom.

Inboard rear has the small nut plate riveted to the floor. What originally held the outward bolts in place? I see on here I can tap the bolt holes to a bigger thread but what would I be tapping?

The metal piece is inside (above) the triangle shaped hole in the corner of the frame.

One of mine was stripped and the PO just used a longer bolt and installed a nut on the underside which was accessible through that triangle hole.

While I had the interior out I drilled the stripped hole out and re-tapped. Then installed basically a threaded insert (cut off end of a grade 5 bolt that was drilled and threaded back to the original seat bolt size) and thread locked it in place.

You would be tapping the nut. If its stripped you can slowly grind the nut off and tack a new nut on with a MIG welder. Just a little tack on each side of the nut would do (180 degrees apart).

Thank you for your replies. Is there any sort of correct nut/ plate i may be missing and I can just install? I don't necessarily see signs of a nut plate having been riveted to the floor but I can't see much with the body on. I think I can feel metal when I feed a bolt through the hole but does mean they sandwiched the metal plate between two layers of fiberglass?

Oh, and my triangle piece doesn't have the triangle hole. Not a 72 frame.

Thanks again.

Default 72 vette

I think this is what you are talking about. Not sure what was there for 72 but this is off my 69.

The bracket is riveted to the under body.

Hi Barry,
Your 72 would of had 2 rectangular plates flat riveted in place for the rear of each seat. (1 per track).
R's picture shows the typical plate.
If on your car there was a 'nut' involved, it was added because the threads in the plate had been stripped and a longer bolt and nut was added/used to secure the rear end of the track.
Your 72 will have a different seat belt mount than shown in r's picture, as he surmises, because your 72 was the first year for a 'reel' on the seat belt.
Regards,
Alan

That's what I was hoping the answer would be but I see no sign of rivet holes inward of the bolt hole. Plus, the fiberglass inward of the bolt hole is not flat. Is has 2 small "steps" that would prevent a plate situated in the position to sit flush on the floor.

Ummm.... are the footman loop bolt holes still there and intact for the seat belts? That looks like the whole plate is missing

Once I'm finished installing java here I'll go see if I can take a pic off mine.

I don't have anything to drill out. It's actually a fender bolt right now! M- you do have a rectangular plate in that position on your 72, right - oriented like the picture of the 69?

I'm trying to remember, what it looked like. I thought it had both of the seat and footman loop holes in one plate but I'm frequently mistaken. I don't recall if you could see it from the outside where your pic is showing
Coffee is half gone and I'll walk out and take a pic

Here's the rear footman loop bolt next to the seat bolt. Footman loop bolt goes into a plate that does appear to be between 2 layers of glass

Hi Barry,
Do your pictures show the area of the shoulder belt mount on the rear wheel well…. I thought we were talking about the rear seat TRACK mount?
No footman screws near the seat mounts.
Where are we?
Regards,
Alan

Here's the typical shoulder belt mount and footman loop mount.

Actually that looks like mine, drivers side with the tank vent (my pass side has the supply and return lines)

Barry
Just looked t mine and I think your OK. The plate seems to be sandwiched along that outside and not visible. As you see in your second pic (footman) the plate us under (well above) the glass.

Stick a magnet to it and it should be good

Hi Alan
I think we're here where the outer rear seat track bolt is near the rear bolt for the seatbelt giant footman loop type thing.

It would seem the reinforcement is trapped between the inner and outer floor along the edge.

Here you can see the underside glass cleared away around where the seat track bolt comes through

Also you can sort of see the thread insert I made to fix the stripped hole on mine

Alan. This is the footman loop that is the lap belt guide.

M- so we're saying the rear outward seat mount goes through the same plate that the lap belt guide bolts into? That makes sense because like I said I could feel metal when I put the bolt through the hole.

Hi M,
The footman loops are tiny chrome loops used with the straps to store the roof panels.
The large horseshoe bracket mounts the inner side of the seat belts.
I think we're talking about very different things… B started out asking about 'seat' mounts…. I took that to mean seat tracks not seat belts.
Regards,
Alan

The large bracket the inner seat BELT bolts mount to. The INNER seat TRACK mounts are seen too.

Sorry for any confusion. My problem is the bolt that goes through the seat track through the floor - which I am calling a seat mount bolt.

And my retractable lap belt guides look like giant footman loops.
