Default Rear spring cushion cup - new tool?

I just saw this new toy on CC's mailer:

http://www.parts123.com/corvettecent...&partno=582219

It's essentially a flaring tool that will fix the cushion cup from the trailing arm through which the rear leaf spring bolt goes. I don't know that I've ever seen a pic of a trailing arm with this cup attached. Is this the way they were done in the factory? If so, is there any advantage at all in doing this?

I'm a huge fan of tools but this one seems a little over the top. What say you oh wise C3 CF

Of perhaps greater significance (to me anyways), CC is now selling the brass bushings that are in the wiper arm transmissions. I managed to find a cheap arm assembly just to get two of these that had worn through on my car. At the time, I couldn't find them anywhere.

That is the way they came from the factory. When my TA's were rebuilt, they came back with new ones installed. I don't know what the advantage is, but, GM sure saw the need for it. That's good enough for me. I did install new ones in my leaf spring ends during my rebuild.

Hi c,
Because the trailing arm moves in an arc, (it pivots on the bolt in the frame pocket), but the spring moves only up and down in the same plane, the large bolt puts a lot of side pressure on the rubber bushings and the cups are there to help the bushings from distorting too much.
Often you can see the reality of this in old bushings which have a very distorted center hole but are still quite round because of being in the cup.
Regards,
Alan

Even in this picture with the spring unloaded you can see the torque the bolt is putting on the bushings.

I used this setup to crimp the cups in the spring, don't know if it would fit in the trailing arm, tho.
The "cone" socket is actually an old idiot light temperature sender socket which is probably not on everyone's list of needs
