Does anyone know what the material is that the General used in molding the shifter COnsole Plate ?
I am doing a total resto this winter. I plan to modify the console plate by removing the ash tray and cig lighter and fabing a mount for my sirius xm dock. I need to know the material so I can chose the correct product to solvent weld the plastic mods.

Shifter consoles and center clusters are plastic for the 77-82 models. They appear to be molded thermoplastic to me and I would not be surprised to learn GM did not make them and bought them from an outside vendor. Plastic model builders sometimes use a solvent based product called Tenar-X to bond different types of plastic.

Plastic fusion or Plastic Weld work great for making repairs to the plates. The would also work good as a filler if you were going to cut a plate and insert it into ash tray hole.
Willcox;
Thanks for the reply. I have seen plastic weld on the rack at NAPA. I think the sirius dock in the ash tray will work out sweet. Pull the actual radio out, close the ash tray door and wala no sirius.
I knew from the beginning that the plate was NOT zinc. Could not reply until now due to a busy day with my church.
Again my thanks
