As I'm getting ready to do the 200-4r conversion, I've been wondering about installing a tranny cooler. But where would I put the darned thing? (I've got AC, so space is limited.) And if I install it, does that mean I can bypass the radiator cooler? And would that help keep the engine a bit cooler?
either from a junkyard truck/tow car nice HUGE factory type unit, make don't matter....Mine is from a chrysler tow package....OR buy the biggest unit you can find...meaning the most expensive...around 80 bux I think....make sure it's the biggest one in the catalogue for that company/mfgr....run it alone mounted to the a/c condensor between it and the radiator....typically about an inch or two of room there....I just use tie wraps and padding to mount mine...
I have the biggest B&M from Summit. RED73 has the trick idea that i thought about doing years ago. He has the long tube aluminum finned heat sink mounted on the big front pipe vac. reserve. Of course his is show quality. Ask him to post the picture. It's all done with steel brade and AN fittings.
Mine runs through the radiator and then the B&M (@ $60) is now on the return line. The only problem with the big B&M is it requires reducers. Because it is plumbed for 1/2 lines and I only have 3/8ths. so years ago I just had to buy the brass adapters
Makco Distributing has some good prices on coolers, I just ordered one for less than $46.00. It isn't all that huge (11"x 7"x 3/4") but it should be better than just the radiator cooler alone. http://www.bulkparts.com
I plan on mounting it inline, exit the radiator based cooler, so the fluid will go through the radiator then through the external cooler. If I lived someplace that it got really cold this might not be such a good move. Overcooling isn't good for transmissions either.
I had the B&M racing cooler, it had npt inlet and outlet, just added some npt--6 AN adapter, swivels and aeroquip hose, also put an adapter in the rad (forgot what kind to AN) and also installed a remote oil filter w/ temp sender. Lowered trans temp considerably
I mounted mine on the bumper support with zip ties. It faces in sort of an angle downward poistion. its in a good spot right where the air rushes up from underneath. Look up under yur front bumper and youll see the spot. I got a summit cooler thats about 8"x11"x3/4 thick. Fits good up in there. Ill try to post a pic. Plumb the lines out of the tranny and into the bottom of the rad then thru the cooler and back to the tranny. The output line for the 200R is the oppisite than the output of the 700R. im not totally sure right now which is which so do some research to find out.
I just converted from a TCI 200r4 to a Muncie. In any event, TCI suggest using a auxilary cooler for the transmission. Mine was set up under the front bumper, with an aux fan mounted on top.
That is sweeeet! Are you using this in conjunction with the rad cooler or no? And what brand/model number is this cooler? I looked a similar Moroso unit from Summit, but it says "not recommended for street use." Go figure...
