When I bought the car I noticed the driver side brake light was out. No problem .. just a bulb right? wrong! I replaced the bulb and still no light. It comes on with the headlights but not the brakes. So I stick my voltage testor to the contacts and get a solid 12v at each. Clean off the contacts, put the bulb back in, same thing ... comes on with the headlights but not with the brakes. I pull the bulb back out and just on a wild hair I decide to test the current at each contact. On the headlight contact I tested more amperage than my tester could register on its current setting, but on the brake light contact I only tested .3 milliamps  I'm pretty sure that wont drive a bulb!
Could this be a good old fashioned short or something else? I'm no electrician, but I would have thought that a short would cause a voltage drop. I've heard mention of the fact that the brake light leads run through the turn signal switch and to look at my Haynes manual this appears to be the case. Could something have gone awry in there?
Yeah, the bulb works fine (both filaments) in the other socket. It's just in the passenger socket I'm not getting enough current to light up the brake filament ... getting 12v, but no amperage to speak of
Is it possible that someone did some wiring work and got the two(brakelight/tailight) wires reversed? Ive seen this happen before. Also if the slots in the socket are worn or disfigured it is possible to put the bulb in backwards..IE this would line the brakelight contact on the bulb up with the tail light contact in the socket. #1157 I believe is the correct brake/tail light bulb. Make sure thats the one yuor using. Just a few things to check for. Hope this helps.
Also sometimes the socket itself gets all gummed up and looses its spring loaded effect.
wow... Mine does the EXACT same thing. I went threw all the wiring and still cant get find it! (Its not a priority right now though). When you find the solution please post it! Good luck.

Did you test the amperage at the brake light contact? If so, what did you register? This weekend I'm just going to go wire by wire switch by switch until I figure out where the current drop is happening. I don't think the wires actually split off to left and right until the turn signal switch assembly, so it must be something either there or farther back as the pass. side brake light works fine.
