Rebuilding complete front suspension: '79...
I don't fully understand why the Moog upper ball joints came with an "extra" stamping...it's THIN, and conforms to fit over the top of the top portion of the ball joint...but why is it needed? I don't recall seeing this part in any video's....please help! (I really have a feeling
that this part is only needed on certain vehicles, but would to confirm....ready to put the front end together later this week.
Thanks in Advance!
Mooser: I have the same part number...
I can't really tell by your pics, but are you showing the thin ring piece on the
side where the grease zerk is? I would hafta agree with that position (even though
I really don't see the reasoning), as it couldn't go on the boot side, as it would
disform the boot....and we don't want that happening! I don't have the old set I
took off, but I'm real sure they didn't have an "extra" piece like that....
Do you have any idea just WHY it's needed??
Thanks for your reply..it IS appreciated!
Mine is a little different, for a '79, as it is taller than the one you show...I was told on another thread that it DOES go over the rubber seal....I just don't recall seeing that on other ball joints I've change, but it's been many years since I've changed any!
IIRC thore are actually inside the boot and are maybe a 1/4" tall lip. If I tried to put the boot inside it crumples/bunches up but they slide securely onto the outside as shown there on mine.
But that was a while ago so I could be wrong
M
I don't see any way these parts can fit "inside the rubber boot", as it's nowhere near sized right to do that.....I'm thinkin' I'm just gonna leave 'em out of the ***'y...unless
someone can prove it in a picture of the same parts I have...as my "extra" piece is taller than the one you show.....even the instructions that came with it doesn't point out a damn thing about 'em!! Kinda pizzes ya' off after payin' for a good quality name & they don't make it "crystal" clear what their intentions are!!
The 1/4" tall lip I remember might have been taller (damn aluminum pots)
Does yours have that number stamped into it like mine did?
I don't think it could have gone the other way (into the arm) but if your has that number and it's oriented as mine was maybe they sent the wrong boots?
M
Mooser....sorry I took so long gettin' back with ya'.....I got to the point yesterday where I put all the ball joints & bushings on the upper & lower control arms, and the "extra thin" pieces fit in place real nice...IF I'd have waited before I hollered, I would've seen that they all go together good....so I'm "GOOD TO GO"....I appreciate your input!
(Yes, mine has the same number stamped on the part that yours does!)
