Looks like the C4 switch will work-but at almost a c-note for a switch?!!!


My original thoughts on putting this system together was:
the most- available- newest - reliable.

That's why I went w/ this particular set up. At the junkyard there were at least 25 cars that had this motor/set-up. You can buy the motors on eBay all day long for less than $35 w/ the delay board.

The third gen - Its not as new a technology and more collector-not as many and cost more.

Right now...my head can not handle that deep of an electrical project. WAY TOO MANY iron in the fire right now.

And YES...I KNOW all about the 'fences with barbed wire'...I seem to always find those type also.

Very nice approach to the problem. I have added a few items to my spring trip to the $50 all-you-can-carry day at the pull a part. Having a 72 it will need a different motor to use as the body for the late 90's guts if I read everything correctly.

Thank you...my approaches often are not very orthodox!!!
The park solenoid is too large to fit inside the 72 and earlier. You could cut the edge of the case as you only need a 1/4 worth of clearance...or just use a later motor. Wilcox has them brand new for around $100.

Assuming it was used on more than just Corvettes I should be able to find a donor motor body on my next trip. My last couple trips have netted a hydroboost unit each time and several other useful parts for my project.

I have a custom 71 with the long hood so the wiper door is eliminated. I am using the American Auto Wire wiper switch so I am interested as to which wire the power needs to go to as well as the ground. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hey Kevin-

The wiper motor "sees" 12v through the wiper door switch from the service switch under the dash and then to the fusebox. Red/white wire.

The ground is how the motor is controlled -and uses a "shunt" AKA large wire wound resister to ground for the slow speed.

If you could shoot me your email - and I can send you a way to control the motor using the 12V side and a couple relays.

Thanks its kmherrmann@comcast.net Here is a picture of what I have and again no original anything in the car for wiring. I thought I could just take the switch which has a high low and park terminal and hood it directly up?

Great write-up, but LHD Chevs are thin on the ground here, but there are millions of RHD Holdens on the road and in wrecking yards, so I'm pretty sure I can get hold of a GM designed wiper motor. I'll go through your photos and write up when I do and hopefully, the Aussie wiper motors are exactly the same as the US ones. Except they work upside down, of course.

Keep up the great work, I can't wait to see the '71 on its maiden drive.

Do you have that thing (one with the V12) running yet? Do you have a build thread somewhere with some pics I can look at when I touch myself? How was the learning curve with the ITB megasquirt tuning? Very nice work you've given peeks of in other threads.

What is this? I'm looking for a different solution for my wipers as I've been through 2 motors in the past year and I'm tired of getting crappy aftermarket parts that don't last. I'll re-read this thread more carefully when I get some more time as there is a lot of info. Please help me figure out a viable alternative for the wiper motor. I have a 1971 with the wiper door still intact. I don't care about intermittent or anything like that. I just want working, reliable wipers. BTW - I've deleted the mechanical washer pump and put an electric pump in the reservoir.

That ad indicates it only works with non hiding wipers, aren't the C3 wipers the type that park/hide?

Thanks but damn I hoped the revolution was a better motor. Like I said I just want a motor that works more than 6 months. I really don't care about intermittent wipers etc.

Look at a C4 motor- It's positively switched- doesn't have a shunt - much stronger- and will park the wipers correctly. To do the wiper door would just require a relay.

And don't tell the C4 guys- that a 88-90 Cutlass Supreme wiper motor is the SAME as a Corvette. I got one NOS listed as an Olds for $45!!!! I just got the part number and did a google search. The control module(basically ALL the electronics are in the cover)is around a $100 for a Vette...don't know about the 'Olds" piece. I used a modded Cadillac cover as I am using a Caddy stalk on the column to control the wipers. In the second pic- the white is +12v and the black off the bottom of the motor is ground- works fine as a standalone-the blue and red control the washer pump. The motor just has two power sources to control it-

Since you have the outboard washer pump- you are halfway there. get a hold of a C4 switch and run it stand alone - the motor is clocked correctly-and just required one hole in the firewall as two of the three holes lined up. Even the motor output is the same size as the C3!!!

Thanks Richard, I'll look into that and at $45 I could see doing this. Much better than the $200 I've spent on crappy aftermarket motors in the past year.
I assume I'd use the relay on the wiper door safety switch? I'd like to keep everything looking stock. Will my stock '71 switch work with this motor with little modification as possible and again I don't really care about intermittent wipers etc.

I found this kit a while back when I was looking for a solution but haven't done it yet. It's pricey but complete.

My guess is at $1000 they don't sell too many of those. Nice kit just about $800 too much IMO for what you are getting.
