Default distributor rebuild question

I'm recurving my distributor and have to pull it to put in new vacuum advance unit. I haven't done this before so I want to know what areas I should check for tolerance problems and should main shaft be lubricated with anything like grease/oil? Should I replace bushings, buy rebuild kit etc... THX

ttt

I winged it on my own since no one responded ( I did IM Lars) and everything went smooth. Put in new soft springs, advance unit and there was no play in shaft at either bushing so left it as is. Put some AC Delco Rapidfires in (#7 which I hope are right) and now the car is twice as fast as it was (before had no mech or vac advance). Full 36 deg by 2500 and idling at 10 deg before.

Sometimes you just gotta do it yourself. Glad to hear you tackled it alone.

Way Cool.
I did mine myself too. Lars did guide me along though. At first I was afraid of screwing something up then I just dove in. It runs like new.
Did you re-curve it ?

Yes, recurved to obtain the 36 deg by 2500 using different springs then put a 16 crank deg B1 can on to get the 52 at cruise. I still have to check cruise vacuum with gage to make sure I'm at 16-18 Hg. , but at idle I'm at 20 Hg so hopefully all the numbers add up. I was getting 13 mpg, now can't wait to see hopeful 16-17 mpg.

Awesome Surfer69, been thinking of trying this myself also. Where did you get your springs? Are you running ported or un-proted vacuum to your vacuum advance? And what type of vacuum should you see from the intake at idle vs say 3000rpm?

Well I got the springs in an HEI kit from a Napa store. They seem to only have one kit at the store I went to. I'm using ported for vac advance but still need to check cruising vacuum at port to make sure things are right. My idle is a strong 20 Hg. direct manifold hookup with idle mixture set as lean as I can at 700 rpm and at 2500 rpm I forgot to look at vac gage (wathcing timing light and tach) so I'm not sure but maybe around 10 - 15 Hg.
