Default Build Sheets

Has anyone found any build sheets in a 1978 Corvette? I've heard that they could be hidden about anywhere. And if I find one, how do I decode it?

Also, how do I match parts to my VIN? I recently had my clutch replaced and they guy told me that my tranny wasn't original. I talked to the previous owner and he told me that the motor was original but was unsure of the tranny, he assumed it was. What numbers on the tranny do I look for? Any help will be appreciated!!

Can't vouch for '78s, but there was one on top of my fuel tank. Unfortunately, after 22 years of sitting outside , it's not legible. There's just enough there to tell me that's what it is, but that's it. Interior gutted, no other copies found.

Any way to restore the mostly faded ink? Surely some McGyver trick exists!

The trans should have a partial VIN on it.

Thanks!! I have heard about one on top of the fuel tank, but I also have heard not to take the tank out unless you have too, otherwise it will leak. I am hoping to find one sonewhere else!! Thanks again!!
