the dot com's blew because damn few of them ever made any money, so that took every investors 401k funds down to nothing.....it's a rare geek who actually makes money, either for the company or on their own....
the PC industry is following TV/hi fi industry down the tubes on account of cheap prices... and most every kid knows how to programme well enough to get the job done....very very competitive field right now....no not competitieve....throat slicing.....brutal....
and besides, now that the great push is over for other more legit profit making companies, to computerise and streamline their operations....they don't need geeks so much...Y2k has passed us by....

I think you are very lucky to have a job still quite honestly......no one wants apay cut, especially if it affects vette hobby bux.....but a dry garage and roof come first....hate to hear of it, but good luck to you....

GENE :D :D

I'm going to agree with Gene about the job market right now. Olivier, I'd hang on for dear life and hope that they won't lay you off completely.

They are replacing the full time people with kids who will work for next to nothing in internships. Train them to do one thing, the next student another, and next thing you know you've saved money and don't have to pay out anything in benefits.

I work for the government, and although it doesn't pay alot, it is stable. Hopefully things won't get worse for you Olivier!!! Hopefully I haven't said anything wrong to offend you...

I used to work for the state at Florida International University... Working for the state is very stable but VERY boring. I was actually only working 2 -3 hours a week when working there. The rest of the time we were playing games through the Network and downloading musics from the internet...

I have thought about this several times.. however - it's a lot of work...much more as if you are working for a company... It's a lot more headaches too... Should I lose my job - I would probably sell my condo (luckily I have no mortage :D) and invest the money in the stock market and/or real estate.. If you are smart - there's a lot of money to gain in the stock market right now.. All the stocks are pretty low and I'm sure that they are going to rebound within the next couple of months/years...

Definitely not the case where I work. I'm constantly busy and don't have much downtime.

If it's not the state.... it has to be Miami... Hardly anybody at FIU was actually doing something...

So Olivier...

Have you looked at Monster et. al. since you started this post?
There are jobs, but you need 8 years in .NET, 10 years in JAVA and 20+ in C++

Oh and you need to be an expert in the custom app used by the company that is hiring!

That's not really my field... I'm working with Mainframe Technology (COBOL, CICS, DB2, EASYTRIEVE, JCL, VSAM, ENDEVOR, CHANGEMAN,..........)

Olivier

P.S. I'm not really looking for a job. I just put my resume in the resume databases and the recruiters will contact me if there's any demand

Well you could always get a real job like I got and and work your butt off and sweat, get filthy, and breath metal dust all day long for $300 bucks aweek!
%10 should not even be noticed if you would manage your money right.
I make nothing and will die before I retire.

Except cooking tends to get you less than $300/week.

Your 10% cut is probably about what I get paid.

I don't mean to seem rude, just trying to give a little perspective.

If you get to a certain lifestyle - the expenses will be accordingly... I usually was eating out every day of the week.. Now I will probably only eat out once or twice a week... The biggest cutbacks will be in my Vette budget...:( :( :(... I was spending big on my Vettes last year and so far this year... Maybe a couple more small mods and that will be it for this year unless I find a better paying job...
