Default Nut and Bolt Question

This may be a stupid question but...everytime I am working on a project I get held up on running to the hardware, or auto parts store for a silly bolt or nut or washer etc. Is there anywhere that sells an assortment of commonly used ones so I am constanly not one fry short of a happy meal. i spend so much time going back and forth an easy project turns long in a hurry. I have accumulated some by durring projects, but not nearly enough not have to run out all of the time???

Depends what you want them for, the car? You could check out places like Harbor Freight that sell nut/bolt storehouses full of diferent knids and thread patterns. Just an idea.

You must be a relative newbie to the car hobby, since I have been at it for around 40 years or so....I have an extensive collection of ever;y kind of hardware from cabinet to car....and long on the car kind....drawers full...
all sorts of bolts....any good shop has a similar collection...much quicker than running around trying to buy decent Chinese made hardware these days....

I hate it when that happens!!

I’m a toolmaker and have almost every nut and bolt know to man. I said almost because no matter how many you have (or how many stores you buy out) they won’t be the ones you need for your project. :mad :mad

And it’s even worse working on carpentry stuff around the house. (Never did like wood butchers) Off to Lowe’s……Always!!!

I hear what you are saying about having the hardware you need. The biggest problem I have is having the correct grade hardware. For example, if I'm working on the engine or frame I usually would want a grade 8 bolt. exhaust system maybe a grade 5. Most of the assortments I have seen have a grade something substantially lower than grade 5, probably wouldn't trust the strength for even a swingset. Yes, you do need to be careful with the Chinese hardware, these are wonderful peolple, but aren't known for their fine quality steel product exports. I usually make a list and then make my hardware store run and double the quantities. Then I sort and have a supply of the stuff I know I have used.

I agree with you guys, but he didn't say what he wanted them for that's why I suggested Harbor Freight. I had collected quite a supply over the years myself and if I have to go to the store, buy at least 5 of what I need

I try to go with grade 8 hardware whenever possible - in the vette.
They last longer, rust slower, come out easier - but cost a lot more
than grade 3 or 5. So, I just buy 'em as I need 'em - and it takes me
at least 20 mintues one-way to get to a store with hardware.

These are nice grade 8 bolts that I used when the differential came out for
new yokes. The rust has already come through my cheesy paintjob, but
the bolts are still shiny new. Those'll come out like butter. soon.

A few lengths of assorted size threaded rod is nice as a backup. I have
cut my own studs many times when in a pinch to replace a bolt.
Now if I can only find my nuts ... :jester

Of course - like Gene and many others, I try to keep anything that is useful.
Plus, our tranfer station (dump) has nice pickings. There is a "metal" area
that people pile scrap onto. Often, I see boxes of decent hardware. I even
took our pool slide home from the dump !!

LOWE's Hardware has what you need...a large assortment of Grade 8, 5, & 3. They also have many special screws, nuts, bolts, fender washers, sheet metal screws & clips, etc. Another place to find "hard-to-find" bolts & nuts is at an auto body supply store...they stock many of the interior chrome screws that go in the vette, as well as the door panel clips, insignia/lettering clips, and other useful items.
