I have just installed headers on my 76 and new exhaust pipes are next. I will be carrying it to a muffler shop but wanted to get opinions on a disconnect of the pipes thru the cross member to allow removal of the transmission in the future. It seems I will need a way of removing the exhaust just aft of the cross member along with disconnection at the headers. Band clamps, flanges? What do you have? Thanks in advance!!
Stainless steel band clamps are very durable and seal well. Just make sure you bevel the outer edge of your exhaust pipes. A small sharp edge can start a split in the clamp.
I have wished I had a setup like that on my car several times. I have the entire exhaust system, behind the headers, laying on the garage floor right now because I have the trans out of the car.
The best way but will cost quite a bit more is to have the muffler shop weld the ball & socket connectors onto your pipes and header flanges. They'll never leak and will always come apart easily.
I agree. Band clamps to connect the 'down' pipes to the exhaust tubes at the crossover is a great idea. Whether you put the band clamps just ahead of [my preference] or just after the crossover would be the important choice to make when doing this. As with anything you do on a Corvette, access space is always better if there is 'more'.
