Default Exhaust Specialist Advice Needed

Just picked up a 79 Corvette and has the factory old style convertor with muffler delete and sound pretty good. Thought about removing the cat (or replacing with a modern cat) and installing a set of Magnaflow 323454 mufflers. Having the 2 "Y" pipe set up would do 3 things, avoid exhaust drone, quiet it down a bit and set restriction at a manageable level. What troubles me is seeing a lot of the Magnaflows removed and resold to loud, of fit or what? has any one did what I'm looking to do, did it work, let me know, thanks! AL.

Hey Al. First off, congratulations on picking up the '79. We hope to hear more about it in the future.

Regarding your question-Our Exhaust systems/mufflers have always been on the quieter end of the spectrum, since we design our products to improve on performance and sound quality, rather than volume. Most of the time what causes exhausts to get too aggressive is when headers are replaced and cats deleted.

Our guess as to why you see them being sold is that exhaust preference is something that is always evolving, and varies greatly between car owners, so sometimes a few changes are needed to get it exactly how they want.

If you happen to have any other questions for us, feel free to drop us a call or PM. We'd be happy to help!

Most of the newer cars also utilize the higher flowing cats as 1 per bank and then a muffler(s). Do you have any plans to increase the performance of the car later?

No, not in the near future. As you know this was not the best year for horse power. My plans are to go over the car to make it safe and reliable then paint and interior. It's a low mile car so still has life left and runs rather well for what it is. As far as exhaust, magnaflow systems seem to have the Corvette side exhaust tone with out the leg burners.

Thanks for your follow up! I'm completing a frame off on my 68 Corvette (owned over 30 years) And found out my friend was letting his 79 sit out side and I have rescued it, now it sleeps inside with a 1972 Buick GS 455 Stage 1 4-speed. Do you sell the 323454 mufflers or is this a vendor only sales thing? Have you got any feed back on any 79 owners that installed the 323454 mufflers with the Magnaflow cat. (stock manifolds) (front and rear Y pipes), AL.

I am planning on using Magna Flow mufflers when it comes time to replace them. I've watched them and like the sound. My favorite show is Overhaulin and the systems he installs are Magna Flows and I love the sound.
I don't think I'll ever go with side pipes
I have a 68 BB.

I would at least swap the convertor for a new one. The original style was very poor in every way - unless you care more about it being original. The new convertors are a vast improvement.

I put the Corvette Central 2.5" true dual system with the Magnaflow mufflers on my wifes 79. GM 290hp crate with the Comp 262 cam. Stock 2" ram horns manifolds of course no converters.

It sounded good (just a little rumble) and ran well. Everyone that drove the car and heard the car liked it. It was not very loud and had no drone what so ever. Which is good because the wife was not going to stand for me turning her car into a "race car'.

We sold the car to my parents last year who are in their 60's and they both think the car is great.

Old convertor will be going by by, and looking into none or a modern cat.

I have a 78 L82 4spd and bought this Magnaflow system: http://www.parts123.com/corvettecent...50g&ukey=50590

In addition I needed to purchase the exhaust hanger bracket for the 4spd.

Did you buy the early style bracket like they had for the 68-70 4-speed Corvettes?

Was on the fence on exhaust choices as far as stock two "Y" set up that would use a 323454 muffler and the true dual system system uses a 323737 muffler. the 323454 has a shorter inlet pipe then the 323454 muffler. I'm thinking the SQ would be better with the true dual system opposed to the single dual "Y" set up, any options?

In that case find the best flowing converter and use matching size pipes.
Choose your mufflers by the sound you like.

The 323454 and other kits in question actually are not an official Magnaflow product, but are made independently by a 3rd party company using our aluminized mufflers for cost efficiency. The Catback system we currently offer is #16710, which uses the Y configuration and leaves your stock cat in place.

The true-dual system mentioned earlier will be louder, and maybe gain a couple more hp, but will delete your cat from the look of it, which may be a deciding factor for some.

Another thing to consider is the material. Aluminized mufflers and exhaust are susceptible to rusting if the coating is scratched, while full stainless exhausts will not, and tend to last longer.

Now really confused Why would Corvette Central put Magna-Flow's name on a system that is not Magna-Flow? I think the system for my 4-speed 79 would use a 323738-MAG part number. Has any one in MD, PA. or VA installed a 323738-MAG on the Corvette? Who makes the 323738-MAG system for Corvette Central, what does it sound and perfome like?
