Just so you know, a court order is required "if the VIN is removed, altered, or obliterated" (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles Registration and Title Bulletin - #029-13). Your situation is not the same as obtaining a first-time, state-assigned VIN for an assembled vehicle.

I'm gonna take that trim piece off the drivers side windsheild post tonight and see if the VIN plate as fallen down in there somewhere. I don't understand why I can't see holes from the where the rivets would have been.

The VIN tag IS on the doorjamb. Under the trim tag. Three of us "car guys" missed it!

So it's a CA DMV replacement tag and they placed it under the Trim tag?

Default vin
I believe you may have a vin # on the rear upkick rail (drivers side) over the tire. That's where it is on my 69.
