Default interior trim help request- steering column

The upper and lower trim pieces for the steering column on my 68 convert do not fit well. I think the PO used a mixture of parts for 1968 and something else. The lower pieces have 1968 stamped on the interior of each half of the trim. The upper pieces do not have any ID on them. The upper piece fits the steering column hub OK, but does not mate well with the bottom trim piece. Top piece diameter is too large and the bottom piece just inserts inside the top piece. I would like to re-order the parts, but not if the replacements are also a bad fit. The catalog parts look like the ones I already have. Can someone with a 68 look at the attached photos and see if the parts look OK or not? Thanks. RA

ec products is an aftermarket parts supplier.
if you can find some original parts they should fit better.

Nothing precision about the 1968 steering column covers, they just fit inside one another as you describe. As oldboat says the originals will probably fit a little better than the reproductions you currently have, but don't get your expectations up much. You should also have foam strips glued inside the top cover to help center the lower cover to make it look nicer and prevent it from rattling. You can see this in the AIM -UPC 1, sheet E11.

I have the same reproduction parts you have on my 68 vert. Fit is less than spectacular but the foam strips do help quite a bit with both fit and and keeping the rattles at bay(I used adhesive backed foam weather stripping from the hardware store).

Kinda-sorta. Mine are original and they work, but the fit is nothing to write home about.

Thanks, John. Now I do not feel so bad. My trim looks just like in your picture. I expected the two pieces would come together and perhaps have trim screws or something to hold them together. Fortunately my interior is black and black electrical tape is an exact color match. RA

Ron,
I have a 68 with a black interior, my covers which are out right now, look exactly like yours...and they are original. I can shoot you a pic tonight when i get home if you like with a tape measure in the frame for reference as well. Let me know..

And yes, they fit like an afterthought at best.

Thanks, Staylor. No need for the photos- a couple others sent their photos, which look just like mine. I have about six books, including the 1968 AIM and could not find a picture of what the stock covers looked like on a 68. Mine fit so poorly, and based on all of the Bubba items I found on the car, I suspected one or both steering column covers were the wrong ones. Looks like I'm stuck with them. RA
