I just rebuilt my shifter to resolve a detent problem which was that it had no detent from neutral to reverse. When I took the shifter apart I found a washer and a spring held in with a screw in plug. The washer went in first followed by the spring and then the plug. I discovered that the washer keeps the spring from pushing the detent rod all the way up into the detent gate such that it only had a partial engagement. I found a picture just now of one that's for sale on ebay which illustrates this:
As you can see it's not fully engaged into the neutral detent slot. On my shifter I removed the washer, then put the spring in followed by the washer and plug. When assembled in this order the detent fully engages. I can't imagine why the shifters were built this way.
